Treatment for High Blood Pressure

If the blood pressure is not very high, it can usually be controlled by non-medical treatment. Even those patients for whom medicines are necessary, cannot do away with other non-medical measures. Such non-medical measures work to keep the dosage of medicines to the minimum. this obviously minimizes the risk of side-effects. This fact is especially important for persons with high blood pressure because treatment for this disorder is to be continued throughout the life.

Some Non-medical modes of Treatment
(1) Change your outlook and the life – style: High blood pressure is a result of modern, fast and competitive life. Persons with type A behaviour invariably attract this disease. If you possess a type A personality, straightaway implement efforts to change your mental attitude. This may be difficult; but it is not impossible. Understand and accept the ‘Theory of Karma’. Work hard, but do not long for returns. Do not compete with the clock. Make no resolutions like ‘I should complete all these works by today’, or ‘ I should finish this work within this much time’. Do not take office-work to your home. Give some time of the day to your parents, your wife and your children. Let Sunday remain a resting day. Enjoy a 2-3 weeks vacation every year. To decrease mental tension and regain inner peace, resort to Pranayama, Vipashyna, Transcendental Meditation or Biofeedback.

(2) Restrict salt-intake: The connection between high blood pressure and high salt-intake is well known. Therefore, in this disorder, drastically cutting down the salt-intake is indispensable. We usually consume 10-15 grams of salt everyday. This quantity should be cut down to a mere 2-3grams.
• Use a minimum amount of salt while cooking.
• Never use salt at the table.
• Never consume processed or canned foods because they abound in salt.
• Refrain from eating pickles, chutneys and papads.
• Drastically cut down the consumption of salted peanuts, wafers, potato – chips etc.,
• Eat only salt-free biscuits.
• Do not buy butter or cheese from the market; they contain a lot of salt.

Understand clearly that other modes of treatment, including drugs, will be rendered ineffective if you continue to consume salt recklessly. Common salt can be substituted by potassium salt ( K-salt). In fact, things like mustard seeds, pepper and lemon juice can lend great taste to the food and make us unaware of the absence of salt.

(3) Reduce your weight if you are obese: High blood pressure and obesity are intimately related. Many a time, the blood pressure drops merely by reducing weight. Determine the ideal body-weight for your height and body-frame from the tables given at the end of this book.
If your weight is more than ideal, immediately make efforts to reduce it.

(4) Do exercises and yogasanas regularly: That light exercises and yogasanas reduce blood pressure is a proven fact, it should be noted that only isotonic exercises ( those which are repetitive and which are done at a constant pace) are beneficial. Such exercises include walking, jogging, swimming, cycling, etc., isometric exercises, which require a person to use a lot of force in spurts (e.g., weight-lifting) do more harm than good. Exercises should not be overdone. A person should choose pressure. Dr. Udupa of Banaras Hindu University’s Institute of Medical Sciences tried selected yogasanas (especially Shavasana) on 25 patients, whose high blood pressure could not be brought down by other means. These patients were continuously monitored and their blood and urine samples periodically examined. Laboratory investigations resorted to, included plasma catecholamine level, plasma cortisol level and urinary V.M.A. level. At the end of three months, there was a notable reduction in all these three factors, besides the blood pressure. The results have been tabulated below1.

Sl No Investigation Before treatment

 After treatment      ( yogasanas)

1

Blood pressure

152/102

139/90

2

Plasma catecholamine

289.82

234.91

3

Plasma cortisol

27.49

25.02

4 Urinary VMA 2.48 2.05

Dr. Udupa considers Shavasana to be extremely beneficial in high blood pressure. Besides, other asanas like Padmasana, Vajrasana, Yogamudra, Dhanurasana, Paschimottanasana, Konasana, Matsyasana and Matsyendrasana should be learnt from a good teacher or a good book and practiced regularly. All such asanas in which the body is held upside down leg., Sarvangasana, Shirshasana) are prohibited in high blood pressure.

(5) Cultivate correct dietary habits: All the suggestions for diabetics regarding the type and the amount of diet are applicable to persons with high blood pressure too. A person with high blood pressure should consume a low-sugar, low-saturated fat, low-salt and low-calorie diet. Read More...
